Campus Ministry

Every member of the St. Genevieve High School staff views themselves as a campus minister first and foremost. Whether a teacher of math or science, working in the business office, or principal, every staff member knows that we are called to minister to our students on a daily basis.

More and more, our students are beginning to view themselves as campus ministers as well. Sure we have our problems and conflicts, just like any other community. However, what is extraordinary about our community is the desire to know Jesus Christ by finding him in our colleagues and peers. We are constantly challenging one another to teach our faith by living it on a daily basis. We work everyday at creating an ideal Catholic School Community.

Liturgies

Putting it simply, our liturgies are sensational. They are moments of real celebrations of faith! We take pride in the fact that we are a school that loves music and we love to celebrate. Therefore, our school masses are usually filled with great energy and enthusiasm. There are many opportunities for students to be involved in the mass ranging from liturgical dancing, gospel reenactments, and helping with the environment.

Our student body is known for providing great vocals and the sound of 650 plus students singing their hearts out accompanied by first-class musicians makes mass an exciting experience. School-wide liturgies take place approximately eight times a year. We sometimes schedule our masses for the evening or for weekends so that parents and the community can be included. The spirit of the liturgy is due to the involvement, interest, and enthusiasm of our students and staff. Mass at our school is incredible; if you ever get the chance, make certain to attend mass with the Valiants.

Retreats

Retreats are moments that we take to draw back from our normal world in order to know God more and to find Christ within ourselves and in others. At St. Gen’s each grade level has the opportunity to participate in retreats that focus on growing in faith and unity as children of God.

Christian Service

During the school year, every student at St. Genevieve High School - regardless of religious affiliation- will be required to participate and complete a specified number of service hours for his or her Religious Studies course. The purpose is to provide, through personal and community outreach, the experience of God’s grace, which will help students in their faith journeys. Through active participation students will develop new friends, rejoice in discovering talents, experience the joy of giving, and glorify God.

Freshmen Retreat- The birth of the brotherhood/ sisterhood

Within days of stepping on to our campus the ninth graders participate in their very first retreat. Two separate overnight retreats are held; one for the boys and another retreat for the girls. Both begin on Saturday evening and conclude at a Parish mass on Sunday morning. These experiences are led by our seniors who are anxious to share the religious and spiritual aspects of our school in a family-like environment. This early retreat also helps to immerse our new family members in the school philosophy and provides them an opportunity to begin to bond with their new brothers and sisters in faith. Since we are a parish high school, we conclude the retreat by attending a parish mass so we can introduce our newest Valiants to our parish community.

Sophomore and Junior Retreats

Our retreat program is always evolving. Currently, plans are underway for the sophomore and junior retreats and will be announced at a later date.

Kairos

This is the second year of Kairos for the Valiants. Thanks to our friends at Loyola High School and Bishop Amat High School, our senior leadership teams has been able to attend their first Kairos with these sister schools. Upon their return, student leaders were excited to lead the rest of their senior class on our first two Kairos retreats. During 2005-’06, seniors have had the opportunity to attend this intensive four-day Kairos retreat led by student leaders and faculty/staff. This has already had a significant impact on our school and on the senior class.

Kairos is a greek word meaning, “God’s time.” The Kairos retreat program has been around in Catholic schools since 1965; it was begun by the Jesuits and has spread throughout the country. It is specifically designed for seniors, led by seniors and faculty, and provides a community setting for teenage retreatants to take time out of hectic schedules to reflect on their life, their relationships and their Lord.

“I am not here to be served, but to serve.”

- Jesus
Our very special thanks goes out to two of our Catholic High schools. In May, 2005, five Valiants attended a Kairos with Loyola High School, their 61st Kairos. In August of 2005, 14 more Valiants attended the 24th Kairos of Bishop Amat High School. Because of the generous sharing and community spirit of these two schools, St. Gen’s was able to bring a very successful experience to students who participated in Kairos One in October and Kairos Two in November of 2005.

Christian Service Program

Through the Christian Service Program, every student at St. Genevieve High School is given the chance to put into practice Jesus’ command to “Love one another as I have loved you.” And in so doing students recognize their responsibility to our nation, our church, and our world.

How?

By returning to the tradition of our church and looking to the Acts of Mercy for our guides to service. By reaching out to the needy, elderly, sick and disenfranchised in our community.

During the school year, every student — regardless of religious affiliation — must complete a certain number of “service hours” for his or her religious studies course.

Why?

So they can experience, through personal and community outreach, the joy of self-giving and God’s loving grace, while meeting new friends, encountering new experiences and discovering new talents.

Every year Campus Ministry updates its Service Hours Opportunity List to offer students the most relevant and rewarding volunteer experiences. Some of the organizations come from recommendations of students. Direct service hours include serving food at a homeless shelter, tutoring special needs children, teaching English or reading to illiterate adults, visiting with seniors in nursing homes and helping to train Special Olympics athletes. Support service hours range from donating food to food drives, stuffing envelopes for a homeless shelter’s annual fund-raising drive and lobbying for social justice legislation. A service project can be a community building enterprise within a class or throughout the entire school.

“We try to teach that service is an opportunity not an obligation. An opportunity to see Christ in others and show them Christ in us. If they enjoy being of service to others, it is all the more likely that they will continue to volunteer as adults.”

- Kelley Endreola,
Director of Campus Ministry
(2006 - 2007)
Freshmen are required to do 15 service hours, sophomores 25, juniors 30 and seniors 20. But most students find volunteering so fulfilling they find themselves continuing to volunteer after they have met the recommended number of hours. Many, in fact, report that Christian Service was one of best learning experiences they had at St. Genevieve.

Important Deadlines

The deadlines are required for all students. If there is an extenuating circumstance that prevents the deadline from being met a review board may be called to consider extending the deadline. Please communicate with your Religion Teacher or Campus Minister before the deadline.
