BAILEY, KenSocial Studies
Mock Trial Director
Mr. Bailey earned his Bachelor's degree in Sociology from UCLA and his teaching credential in Social Studies, and Mathematics from California State University, Northridge. While in high school and college, he competed in gymnastics.

In his twenty-third year at St. Gen's, Mr. Bailey is currently teaching U. S. History - College Prep and U. S. History - Advanced Placement, affectionately known as APUSH. Over the years, he has taught: U.S. Government; U.S. Government AP; Economics; World History; World Geography; Psychology; Sociology; and Introduction to Law.

He is also in his sixteenth year as Mock Trial Team Moderator.

In 1976, Mr. Bailey drove across the continent from Los Angeles to Montreal, Canada to watch the Olympics Games. In 1984, he also attended the Olympic Games held in Los Angeles, California.

What Mr. Bailey likes best about St. Genevieve's is the spirit and warmth of the students. On his first day as a new teacher in 1981, he was greeted by a student who took the time to welcome a new teacher to the campus. In 1993, when he returned after a leave of absence, he was again welcomed by another student on his first day. That is the Valiant Spirit!

BETHEL, SommerDean of Studies
Art Teacher
In 2001 Sommer Bethel began her career at St. Genevieve High School as an off campus coach for the Cheerleading and Dance teams. In 2003 she was offered a teaching position at SGHS where she taught Junior Religion, Psychology, Sociology and Fine Arts until 2005, at which time she took on her current role as Dean of Studies.

As Dean of Studies, Sommer has a variety of duties, some of which include conducting the school's extensive interview process for new teachers, classroom observations, tracking professional development and developing the master schedule. She also maintains her role as Fine Arts teacher and the Girl's Dance Team coach.

In 1999 Sommer obtained her BA in Criminal Justice with a minor in Fine Arts from the University at Albany located in Albany, New York. Since moving to California in 2000 she has obtained her MA in Education, California Clear Teaching Credential, California Preliminary Administrative Services Credential and is looking to start a doctoral program in the near future.

In her spare time Sommer enjoys eating as much chocolate as she possibly can and taking Salsa classes to burn off all the chocolate she eats.

One piece of advise she would like to give students about life would be to always live your dream. Her life is a testament to being able to accomplish anything you want even when the people around you think you can't. She feels that if you believe in yourself and want it bad enough only you will prevent yourself from accomplishing your goals; don't let others disbeliefs in you be your excuse.

BROWN, DanielleDrama Teacher
After choreographing the successful Spring musicals THE KING AND I and GREASE for St. Gens, Dani Brown was brought on to join the talented and inspiring faculty and staff. Teaching drama and dance is a passion for Dani and she feels fortunate to enrich the lives of her students with the discipline and aesthetic beauty of the arts.

A graduate of the CSUN Theatre department with a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre, Dani has taught theatre and dance for 22 years in both the educational and professional sectors. A performer in her own right, Dani has been in such shows as, THE BOYS NEXT DOOR, FOOTLOOSE, MAN OF LA MANCHA, A CHORUS LINE and ROMEO AND JULIET.

Having been exposed to the arts and “bitten by the bug” at the same age as her St. Gen students, Dani hopes to inspire them to perhaps choose a career in the arts or to simply become a patron of the arts.

VAN GRINSVEN, JohnAlgebra I
One of our past school year themes “We are Called” immediately strikes home with John. After graduating from SGHS in 1975 he returned in 1981 to begin his teaching career. Here it is thirty years later and he still looks forward and enjoy every day of teaching. He knows that some people my see this as strange or just plain crazy, but how many people do you know who can say they love their job? John feels very fortunate to be called to a rewarding career here at SGHS. Was he destined to become a teacher? Until recently he would have said “no”. A few months ago he was in the middle of obtaining his U.S. passport when he noticed an ironic bit of information on his birth certificate. Sure the certificate had all the usual legal information like his name, date of birth, weight, doctor’s name, etc., but what caught his eye was the signature of the attending nurse in the delivery room. On that line it was signed Sister Genevieve.

The time students spend together at Saint Genevieve is relatively short when you compare it to your entire life, but so much seems to happen during high school, Maybe when thinking back you will realize that your education at Saint Genevieve helped you become a better student, a better person, a person of good character, a person of faith . . . maybe a person who will help make the world a better place in which to live.

Wendy (Wen Ling) Yang was born and educated in Guangzhou, China. She earned her B.A. degree in English at Guangzhou University and also holds an English Second Language Teaching Certificate. Her addition to the faculty makes SGHS the first and only Catholic high school in the LA Archdiocese to offer Mandarin as a foreign language choice for students. Additionally, in 2007, Ms. Yang initiated the first classes in Chinese at St. Genevieve Elementary School.

Because of the growing interest in studying about China, Ms. Yang took 21 Valiants in March, 2008 on an exciting educational trip in China.
