alt="" />For 6-foot, 180-pound defensive back Tim Kenney, donning the blue and gold for the past two years has fulfilled a life long aspiration.
Kenney grew up just over two hours away from campus in Belvidere, Ill. He is a third-generation Domer, with both his father and grandfather having
graduated from Notre Dame. "I grew up wearing a gold helmet and being a Notre Dame fan all through high school," Kenney said. Kenney kept himself
busy by captaining his football, basketball and baseball team in his senior year. He was All-State in football in his final season. That year he had
70 tackles and two interceptions for the Belvidere Buccaneers. The political science and Spanish major headed to the University of Illinois for his
freshman year of college. He was in the process of walking on to their team when he learned that he had been accepted to Notre Dame. Two years later
Kenney managed to walk on to play with the Irish. "It was nerve racking," he said. "[Irish coach Charlie] Weis was really upfront with us. Pretty
much everyday you weren't sure if you would be cut but it was a great experience." Kenney said he is dedicated to playing his role as the
opponent's defense week in and week out on the practice field and getting the starters ready to take the field on Saturdays. Off the field, Kenney
has leaped into politics with a two summer internships - one in Springfield, Ill and the other in Los Angeles. While in the city of angels, he
interned under governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and met the ex-movie star. "It piqued [Schwarzenegger's] interest to hear that I was a football
player," Kenney said. "I asked him for some advice on how to gain some weight and get bigger." Although the Governator didn't have any helpful
hints for beefing up, the experience was something Kenney will not soon forget. Kenney also spent a semester in Puebla, Mexico in order to help with
supplementary Spanish major. Kenney was nervous about missing football and campus for such a long period of time but he had to leave in order to fully
learn the language. "If I had to do it again I don't know if I would want to be away from Notre Dame that long," Kenney said. At the end of his
time here in South Bend, Kenney is still uncertain about where he will go or what he will do. A career in politics is a possibility, but he also is
exploring his options with graduate schools. Kenney also wants to stay involved with the game somehow after he hangs up his cleats this winter.
Although he never wants to step into Weis' shoes, Kenney would love to coach at the high school level or for youth programs in the future. Kenney
said Belvidere's defensive backs coach was a role model for him both on and off the field. "He is real good guy who is easy to get along with, but
he is very serious when it comes to football," Kenney said. He wouldn't mind returning to the Bucs to coach along with old mentor, and continue to
surround himself in football tradition.

An Important Change in our November School Day Schedule

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Many of you know that for the last few years, our school has been attempting to create a school calendar and a school day that will better ensure the
success of ALL students. Our current school year model is more than one-hundred years old and designed when most Americans lived on farms. The
summer months were the time for working the farm and reaping the crops. Children were needed at home to work during these months.

One-hundred years ago, teachers had very different lives too. They were often not permitted to be married and were expected to devote their lives to
the school and its community. At the time, it was not uncommon for a teacher to be responsible for educating many children at different grade levels,
often in the same room. Therefore, the school day had to be a long one in order to teach so many students learning at so many different grade
levels. And since teacher would not see their students for three months, they attempted to squeeze as much in as possible into every day their
students attended school

What has evolved over time is a calendar and a school day that work against the success of our students and our teachers by demanding far too much be
accomplished in too little time. We can see it in the stress and achievement levels of our students. Colleges also look for well-rounded students
and expect them to be part of a team or club. Leadership roles for students have become more important than ever. Teachers are also encouraged to
coach a team or supervise a club. At our own school, the vast majority of teachers are involved in at least one additional responsibility outside the
school academic schedule.

We hope you are proud of the fact that St. Gens is a leader in the field of education. In keeping with our efforts to provide the best possible
education to our students, we are going to make a change in our calendar and our day for the 2010-2011 school year. Our plan is to take the current
curriculum which, in the old calendar, must be completed in 180 days and add additional days to the school year in order to S – T–R – E –T –
C–H and complete the curriculum over a longer period of time. By doing so, we will create a much friendlier school day for teachers and students,
one which promises to deliver less stress and more time to accomplish academic goals.

One of the first questions you may have is to ask how this change will affect summer vacations. We promise to allow a minimum of four weeks (more
likely, five weeks) during the summer to allow those of you who travel out of the country to have plenty of time away.

Another question you will be concerned about is the impact of tuition increases to cover these additional days. For the last 8-9 years, we have
raised tuition $35-$40 per month to cover inflation and increases in operating costs. That will not change. The maximum increase in tuition will be
$400 for the year, just like any other year. Like all families with students enrolled at our school, those families receiving financial aid will be
asked to pay the additional increase.

In the past, we have had questions from parents regarding dropping their children off early on their way to work. The concern has also been expressed
that, because the school day will be shorter, some parents may not be able to pick their children when the school day is finished. To help address
these concerns, we have extended our library hours from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Additionally, we are currently in the process of renovating space next
to the gym that will serve as a café. It is our expectation that, beginning in January, students will have an on-site café that will also be open
throughout the day. We do not yet have exact hours, but breakfast will be available to early arrivals.

By extending the year and shortening the school day, we expect to accomplish the following, all of which will benefit your child:

Action: Provide more time for students to complete homework assignments, study, get tutoring and participate in school activities.

Result: This will help to reduce students’ stress levels and enhance opportunities for greater success in their studies.

Action: Eliminate the need for a summer school by creating a learning environment in which every child who tries succeeds.

Result: Create a more “family-friendly” summer in which no student need attend summer school and all students can enjoy their summer holiday with the
parents and siblings. This “family-friendly” summer will also extend to our faculty, who will not be required to teach summer school and can also
spend meaningful time with their own families while being rejuvenated for the coming school year.

Action: Pro

Click here to view this thread started by deguzman

At 7-0, A Revived St. Genevieve Football Program Merits A Parade

The Panorama City Catholic school's team had seven losing seasons this decade. The turnaround is part of a larger school success story being
celebrated on the eve of homecoming.

There were teenage zombies running around St. Genevieve High in Panorama City this week as part of homecoming activities, their faces red and their
T-shirts torn. Michael Jackson's "Thriller" is the homecoming theme, and that could be the motto for Southern California's only 7-0 football
team.

That's a remarkable achievement for any program -- especially one with seven losing seasons this decade. And it fits in with the success story of a
Catholic school that has gone through a transformation, if not a resurrection, over the last 10 years.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, St. Genevieve was a football powerhouse in the San Fernando Valley. Its coach, Lindon Crow, played cornerback for a
1958 New York Giants team that had Vince Lombardi as offensive coordinator and Tom Landry as defensive coordinator.

In other words, Crow had learned from the best, and knew what he was doing. One of his assistants was a young upstart named Ed Croson, who went on to
guide Birmingham to four City Section titles.

But Crow retired, the community changed, and St. Genevieve was barely hanging on when Dan Horn became principal in 1999. School enrollment, once near
1,000, had dropped to 300.

Horn decided to implement a Character Education program designed to teach students the pillars of good character, such as citizenship, trustworthiness
and responsibility. In 2003, the school was named a National School of Character, the first in California and the first Catholic school in the
nation.

Nothing turned around overnight. It took months, if not years, to have an effect. But slowly, the school changed. Enrollment picked up. And an
athletic program that qualified only six teams for the playoffs in the 1990s has sent 76 teams this decade.

No sport has made a bigger turnaround than football. The school had four head coaches in four years until Eric Harris, a former All-City linebacker
for Chatsworth, arrived in 2007. He had been defensive coordinator at Calabasas and coached in Switzerland. But what he lacked in credentials he more
than made up for in energy and commitment.

At 28, Harris has the team believing in itself. Adding to the Valiants' success was the hiring last year of Scot Ruggles as football operations
director. He had been a defensive line coach at Harvard. His job is to help free up Harris, who teaches five classes of world history. Ruggles is in
charge of scheduling, fundraising and equipment, and he also coaches the defense.

Then there's the team's standout player, senior quarterback Chris Navarro, who has been attending St. Genevieve schools since kindergarten and has a
3.8 grade-point average. He has rushed for 24 touchdowns and passed for eight.

"The whole thing is I trust him," Harris said.

St. Genevieve is ranked No. 3 in the Northeast Division, which equates to Division XIII, the lowest in the Southern Section. It's a far cry from 31
years ago, when the Valiants defeated Sherman Oaks Notre Dame in a game, but the team and the school have picked themselves off the ground and started
their climb.

Enrollment has nearly doubled in 10 years, to 579 students. Tuition, $7,100 a year, remains the least expensive for a Catholic high school in the San
Fernando Valley. The school has started to attract students from South Los Angeles private middle schools after sending buses to the area following
the closing of Daniel Murphy High. Its demographics represent the community it serves, with 48% of the students Latino and 45% Filipino.

On Saturday night, St. Genevieve celebrates its 50th anniversary with homecoming festivities at Sun Valley Poly. The Valiants play Long Beach St.
Anthony at 7:30.

"I had a vision for this school, what it could become, but it has surpassed anything I could imagine," Horn said.

On Saturday at 4 p.m., there will be a parade down Roscoe Boulevard, complete with floats made by students and football players traveling on flatbed
trucks and cheerleaders escorted on a fire engine in the middle of a usually busy Los Angeles street.

"Each year, we turn Panorama City into small-town America for about an hour," Horn said.

This year, it truly is a chance to celebrate a school and football program's rebirth.

Homecoming - A Letter to Our Parents

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Homecoming week is here and we encourage students to get involved and support their class by participating in events. The week culminates with the
Mass on Friday and the Parade and Homecoming football game on Saturday. Please check the calendar on the school’s website for updated schedules. We
look forward to seeing parents at these events and appreciate your support for SGHS.

Homecoming week is a busy week for our students and their moderators and they are frequently here on days off and during irregular hours preparing
flowers for the floats and practicing for activities. The school building seems like a revolving door and students are coming and going during these
times. Some students stay for only a short time and others stay longer helping their class while others leave campus to eat and return to help.
Although the class moderator is present to supervise students, the students are expected to conduct themselves appropriately while on campus. The
students are also expected to keep their parent(s)/guardians informed of scheduled activities and when and if they leave campus for any reason.

Students that mislead parents and or faculty and use Homecoming activities as an excuse for engaging in other actions may have consequences here at
school.

Parents, here is the dress code for the mass on Friday. Students who have the formal attire are expected to wear it for the mass. Students who do not
have the formal attire from Dennis uniform are still required to purchase the uniform as soon as possible but for this Friday should follow these
guidelines:

Men: Tan/Light brown khakis or dress slacks. Black or brown dress shoes(absolutely no tennis shoes), white button down shirt.

Ladies: Grey, black or dark solid color skirt of appropriate length(3 inches above the knee when standing), black or brown dress shoes(absolutely no
tennis shoes),white button down shirt

Happy 85th, Mr. President

AMERICUS —

Celebration was in the air inside the Rylander Theatre on Sunday afternoon as former President Jimmy Carter escorted his wife Rosalynn into the
theater for a celebration of his 85th birthday. The Rylander was filled to capacity with those wanting to catch a glimpse of the former president, and
send him best wishes for his birthday (Oct. 1).

The celebration started off with the audience lending their voices in the singing of the National Anthem, before being welcomed to the event by
Everett Byrd, a member of the Americus Theater and Cultural Arts Authority. Those gathered then were introduced to a performance from St. Genevieve
High School’s dance teams and choir.

The choir performed a medley of hits that highlighted important years in Carter’s life. The choir celebrated Carter’s birth by performing "It Had to
Be You," a song released in 1924, the year Carter was born. The choir also brilliantly performed “Midnight Train to Georgia,” “Georgia on My Mind”
and “Rainy Night in Georgia."

The choir also dedicated one of Carter’s favorite songs "Wind Beneath My Wings," to his wife, former first lady Rosalynn Carter. Nearing the end of
the song, the choir filed into the audience where each presented the former first lady with a rose.

After an intermission, pianist David Osborne took the stage, dazzling the audience with his playing and a few comedic costume changes. Osborne also
played two songs on the theater’s organ, much to the crowd’s delight.

Both Osborne and the St. Genevieve choir had previously performed for President and Mrs. Carter. Osborne was a principal entertainer at Carter’s 75th
birthday celebration, which was also the grand opening of the Rylander, and was also among the organizers of the event. Osborne has returned to Plains
and Americus many times, especially to honor and perform for Carter on his birthday in past years.

Osborne concluded his set, donning his “Elton John personae,” and was joined by St. Genevieve’s and the audience as they sang “Happy Birthday” to the
president.

Carter then took to the stage and gave some comments about the event. Carter thanked St. Genevieve’s for coming, saying “I know it’s hard to believe
that these kids came from a high school and not directly from Broadway.” Carter also thanked Osborne, saying, “I am truly thankful that one of the
greatest piano players in the world is one of my friends. He has blessed our church in Plains with music for so many years, including this morning,
and if angels wanted to hear beautiful music they would come to Maranatha Baptist Church when David Osborne is playing.”

Carter thanked his wife, saying “I must admit that I got a little choked up when the choir sang ‘Wind Beneath my Wings’ because that’s what Rosalynn
has been for me. I love her as much now as I did 63 years ago when I asked her to marry me for the first time and she said no.”

Carter also took an opportunity to share a story of where he grew up, telling how it was his neighbors who helped shape the man that he became. “The
thing that makes me grateful is this community. As all of you know I came from a tiny town of about 600 people. I lived two and a half miles away from
Plains in a place called Archery, and all my neighbors were African Americans. In a time when our entire nation was racially divided, they adopted me
as one of them. They taught me some of the simple things in life. When I got to the end of one of my last books (“An Hour before Daylight”) I sat down
and tried to think of the five people that had influenced me the most, (besides my mother and father). Out of those five, only two of them were white
people. Out of that environment, which I entered when I was four years old, it has shaped my life. It shows that sometimes when we underestimate
others, we find that they are equal to us in every possible way. Now our nation has realized those truths that I learned in my mother’s lap and with
my neighbors in Archery, and that is one of the things that I am thankful for.”

Closing his remarks, Carter said, “There has never been another governor of any state, and there has never been a president of any nation on earth
that has had such good support as I have had from my neighbors in Plains, Preston, Leslie, DeSoto, Ellaville and Smithville. It’s because of all of
you that I became the president of the greatest nation on earth. That’s the unique thing about the life of the 39th President of the United States —
is that his home folks put him in office.”

Following the program, the crowd walked across Lamar Street to Rylander Park, where they enjoyed punch and a piece of a four-tiered red, white and
blue birthday cake made for Carter by the local Winn-Dixie bakery.

St. Genevieve High School students to perform for former President Jimmy Carter

The dance teams and choir from the Panorama City campus will provide entertainment for his 85th birthday party at a theater in Georgia.

The dance teams and choir at St. Genevieve High School in Panorama City count plenty of boosters on their home turf and one very important supporter
3,000 miles away -- former President Jimmy Carter, who chose the students as one of two scheduled acts to perform today at his 85th birthday party.

Carter and St. Genevieve first kindled a relationship four years ago after Principal Daniel Horn and several students addressed a conference on
character education in Atlanta and decided to travel to Plains, Ga., to hear the former president speak.

In 2006, a group of teachers and students filmed a documentary about Carter and his presidency, and last spring, the school performed a production of
"Singin' in the Rain" at the Plains High School auditorium that was attended by the former president and his wife.

In a video, Carter described St. Genevieve as "one of the finest schools in America [with] the best choir I've ever heard."

So it wasn't a complete shock when the school got a call several months ago requesting the presence of the St. Genevieve Valiant Voices Choir and the
Valiant boys and girls dance teams for the performance, which takes place at the Rylander Theatre in Americus, Ga. The other act on the bill is
pianist David Osborne.

Students are extremely honored, Horn said. They will perform for 45 minutes and have prepared a selection of music that highlights important years in
Carter's life: He was born in 1924, so they will perform "It Had to Be You," a song released that year. There will be a 1970s medley to denote his
election in 1976 and also favorite tunes, such as "Wind Beneath My Wings" and John Lennon's "Imagine."

Students Jordan Parks and Rosalind Smith, both 14-year-old freshmen who will perform a duet on "Rainy Night in Georgia," expressed a mixture of
excitement and nervousness.

"I'm looking forward to this being something memorable to be able to share with my family and to just be fun," Jordan said.
